The path from helper to setter
Nobody is born knowing tile. Here is how the ladder works on our crews:
- Helper / General Labor keeps the setter moving: loading materials, setting up the saw, making cuts, carrying tile. Day one, no experience needed.
- Tile Finisher is a helper who grouts well enough to work alone. That is the point where the pay steps up.
- Tile Setter runs the work. Once a finisher is fast enough to stay ahead of the setter, the setter starts teaching them to set. Then the cycle starts over with a new helper.

Do I need experience to apply?
Not for the helper position. Helpers learn the trade on the job from working setters: materials, saw work, cuts, and eventually grouting. Experience matters for setter, finisher, and estimator roles, so tell us what you have done when you apply.
How does pay work?
Hometown Stone pays weekly. Your rate depends on the role and what you can do, and it steps up as your skills do. Helpers who learn to grout and work independently move up to finisher pay.
Where is the work?
We are based in Modesto and work across the Central Valley, with commercial projects across Northern California. Crews are home every night.
What happens after I apply?
